Yao Texts

The six Yaos of the Nourishment Hexagram tell the story of how to nourish both the body and mind.

Nourishment Hexagram - Yao 27.1

Misfortune

Hoarding wealth while envying others' possessions invites disaster.

It describes the danger of abandoning inner spiritual wisdom in favor of pursuing external material pleasures. Envying others' wealth is harmful. Officials may be prone to accepting bribes, business ventures may face difficulties, and competitors might profit instead.

Nourishment Hexagram - Yao 27.2

Misfortune

Surviving by cultivating barren lands or resorting to robbery for livelihood brings danger.

It describes the danger of using the wrong methods to maintain one's health. This can lead to dramatic ups and downs and disputes. Officials should guard against demotion, and businesses may experience losses.

Nourishment Hexagram - Yao 27.3

Misfortune

A farmer ignores advice and insists on farming barren land for ten years, only to end up with nothing. Violating the proper way of nurturing life and relying on dishonest means is extremely dangerous and could lead to ten years of misfortune.

It describes a stage of career growth where you work extremely hard, even juggling multiple roles. Despite the challenging circumstances, you manage to persevere without making mistakes. However, if your methods are incorrect, no amount of persistence will lead to success.

Nourishment Hexagram - Yao 27.4

Fortune

Like a tiger focusing intently on its prey, with unwavering dedication and relentless desire for food, it ultimately reaps abundant rewards.

It describes having a strong desire for food that nourishes the body or knowledge that enhances understanding. With consistent effort and long-term supplementation, one will achieve significant benefits.

Nourishment Hexagram - Yao 27.5

Fortune

Cultivate barren land and settle down peacefully; this promotes good rest and self-cultivation. Crossing a large river is not advisable.

It emphasizes the need to act cautiously and avoid rushing for quick success. Especially when facing significant risks, it is advisable to take time to recuperate, wait for the right opportunity, or seek assistance. Officials may achieve success with the help of others, and business endeavors are better suited to a fixed location rather than frequent movement.

Nourishment Hexagram - Yao 27.6

Fortune

By following the principles of self-nourishment, you have nurtured your once-weak self into a strong state, and now you are ready to cross the large river.

It signifies that once sufficient resources and capabilities are accumulated, actions will proceed smoothly. Officials will gain significant trust and responsibilities, businesses will achieve profits through hard work, and students will achieve excellent results in exams.

When interpreting the hexagram, pay attention to the five-element attributes of each yao, interpreting them according to the cycle of creation and destruction. When studying in conjunction with the changing hexagram, note which yao is activated, whether it brings benefit or harm, and whether it is easily activated. Further details can be found here:
