The Relationship Between the Four Pillars of Destiny and the Five Elements

In Chinese, Japanese, and Korean astrology, the Four Pillars of Destiny (also known as the Eight Characters or Saju) is a concept used to describe the four components that form the basis of a person's destiny: year, month, day, and time of birth.

The Five Elements——metal, wood, water, fire, and earth—are an important concept in traditional Chinese cosmology.

Generation Cycle: Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood.
Controlling Cycle: Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood.

Why Discuss the Four Pillars of Destiny and the Five Elements?

In the article What is luck? What is "Qi"? How can we change our fortune? we mentioned that while fate cannot be changed, Qi luck can. The Four Pillars of Destiny is a form of Chinese divination that calculates a person's Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches based on their birth date and time, and then deduces their destiny according to the generation and controlling cycles of the Five Elements. The Four Pillars of Destiny represent the time information of a person’s birth, serving as the starting point of one's life path and destiny. By studying the Five Element attributes represented by the Four Pillars of Destiny, one can penetrate a person's personality traits, family environment, and life circumstances. If someone's main element is fire, they tend to be more optimistic, cheerful, enthusiastic, proactive, and generous when dealing with others. If water is the main element of a person, it suggests that they are sensitive, suspicious, delicate, have a tendency to think wildly, and are not easy to trust others.

Birthday, the Four Pillars of Destiny, and the Five Elements

The Four Pillars of Destiny are determined based on the year, month, day, and time of birth. The birth year corresponds to an Earthly Branch (zodiac sign), the birth month to a Heavenly Stem, while the birth day and time each correspond to a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. These four pillars represent a person’s destiny characteristics, with each pillar consisting of two characters, hence the name "Eight Characters."

The Five Elements are metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, each representing different traits and attributes. Metal signifies hardness, sharpness, and valuable wealth; wood represents growth, expansion, and vitality; water indicates fluidity, change, and wisdom; fire stands for passion, energy, and brightness; earth symbolizes stability, support, and substance.

Each character in the Four Pillars of Destiny corresponds to one of the Five Elements, thus imbuing the person’s destiny with 8 attribute points. Since everyone's birth time is different, the Four Pillars of Destiny will have different attributes. For example, a person born on August 15, 1985, between 00:00 and 00:59, would have the following Five Element attributes:

Metal: 1
Wood: 2
Water: 1
Fire: 1
Earth: 3

This article will not go into detail about how to calculate these; there will be a guide on using a program to automatically calculate the Five Elements at the end of the article.

How to Improve the Five Elements

The principle of replacing what is lacking is the main guideline in improving the five elements. If a person has a small water element in the five elements, they should find more ways to connect with it. The following aspects to consider are: living habits, environmental feng shui, dietary regimen, and wearing objects.

We calculate your five-element information based on your birthday date and assist you in supplementing your five-element deficiency.
